Projects

learning with the Prince 1.Proposed the concept of learning companions (learning with the Prince) in 1988 (ITS88) and developed the first prototype, Integration-Kid in 1991 (IJCAI91). The concept was originally intended to provide a new breed of intelligent tutoring systems. Subsequently it contributed to widening the horizon of the field from intelligent tutoring to collaborative learning and social learning. This concept has recently drawn a rapid growth of interest along with generation of a variety of names by different researchers such as virtual character, virtual peer, pedagogical agent, trouble maker, teachable agent, animal companion, and so forth. A number of research and technological advancements, including affective learning, social learning, human media interaction, new views on student modeling, increase of storage capacity, Internet, wireless and mobile technologies, ubiquitous computing, digital tangibles, and so forth, are driving learning companion research to a new plateau. Paving conceptual and prototypical foundation for a possible research agenda on realizing the ultimate vision of learning companion research - building "lifelong learning companion" is one of the Center's current research efforts.

2.Developed possibly the earliest dedicated synchronous (real time) network supported collaborative learning system inside classroom, Distributed WEST, in 1992 (ITS92) and a subsequent research series on intelligent futuristic classrooms such as distributed reciprocal tutoring systems. Continuing this endeavor is a sequence of classroom social network games with wireless and mobile technology support is being designed and investigated.
3.Established one of the largest networked learning community in the world for K12: EduCities, with 1.5 million EduCitizens, 2,300 EduTowns (schools), and 22,000 EduVillages (classes). There are a total of 720 GB of data, which have been collected in EduCities for further analysis. In addition, more than 2,400 courses have been offered in the School-for-All of EduCities with online teachers from different sectors of society. There is Fu-Tzu (school teachers) Workshop with 1,600 school teachers involved, and about 9,000 lesson plans developed by the collaborative efforts of school teachers in the EduPlan of EduCities.

4.Conducted a Ministry of Education and National Science Council sponsored Project for Promoting Academic Excellence for Universities focused on learning technology and active social learning with a budget 14 million US dollars for four years begun in 2000.
5.Managing a cross-ministry National Program of Science and Technology for e-Learning with a budget of 130 million US dollars for 5 years, starting in 2003.
